Visualising History: Remembering the Forgotten Army
Description

Kremena Dimitrova's graphic narrative Visualising History: Remembering the Forgotten Army explores themes of memory, loss and reconciliation between Britain and Japan. Commissioned on the 75th anniversary of VJ Day, the work was intended to educate young people on the diverse armies who served and sacrificed in the Far East.

As Kremena says of the work: "The narrative has no protagonists; only stories, only memories with enduring legacies upholding a sense of solidarity, interconnectedness, and reconciliation. The latter is symbolized through the illustrated presence of a Japanese cherry tree standing next to an English maple tree both planted in the Arboretum’s Grove of International Friendship and Reconciliation by The Right Reverend Colin Bennetts, Bishop of Coventry, and the Japanese Ambassador, HE Sadayuki Hayashi." Using the visual and textual material produced by the young people in the workshops who interpreted sources from the Imperial War Museum, Burma Star Memorial Fund, and Kohima War Cemetery, Kremena co-created the graphic narrative Visualising History: Remembering the Forgotten Army (Aug 2020 - Sep 2020).
