On the second day, illustrator-as-historian Dr Kremena Dimitrova ran a creative workshop where conference participants collaborated on devising and designing a comic that responded to themes and issues that had been explored across the event. Participants were tasked with capturing something about the conference (thoughts, ideas, perspectives, reflections). Working individually, using comics communication bubbles (thought, speech, whisper, scream, broadcast), each participant was asked to write 3 words that came to mind relating to the covered conference themes alongside a short narrative explaining their thinking. The 3 words would serve as the comic titles and/or story guides, whereas the narrative would form the body of the comic. Then, working in pairs and in groups, participants were asked to combine their individual stories—using drawing materials and comic grids, they drew and developed these into collective graphic narratives. Finally, each pair or group shared their comic pages and together identified the likely order these could follow.
Kremena also produced a poem that responded to the conference talks and themes explored. This can be read in full below.
